Morocco,Tizirt - drinking water and sanitation

PROJECT DISPLAY

This project aims to rehabilitate the drinking water network of the village of Tizirt and to set up a sanitation system. It is a decentralized cooperation project between the commune of Imi N'Tayert in the Arghen valley (Province of Taroudannt, Morocco) and a municipality or a union of communes of Hérault, France. The main objective is to improve access to water for the rural populations of this region of the Anti-Atlas. In parallel with the technical aspect, the project includes a training component which translates into training for the local population in the village on water uses and good sanitation practices and awareness of solid waste management. In addition, user associations in charge of the management of water networks will be technically and administratively trained. Finally, the project is part of an integrated water resource management process.

The village of Tizirt is an enclave village, accessible by the track. The population is mainly composed of women with their young children and retirees. The majority of working men go to large cities for economic reasons. In summer or holidays, Tizirt has 623 inhabitants.

People are currently feeding water from a polluted source. The current water system was installed by the village association in 2006 but it presents problems, notably an inadequate supply of water during the summer. Moreover, there is no sanitation infrastructure and the inhabitants complain about the nuisance of these direct discharges into the streets.
